Cell Chemistry Flashcards
All living things get their energy through a reaction called
Respiration
Where there is no oxygen, what’s the respiration process called
Anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration equation
C6H12O6 (aq) + 6O2 (g)
——-> 6CO2 (g) + 6H2O (l) + energy
Respiration is a chemical reaction which
Involves a sequence of reactions
If carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll are placed in a test tube in the sunlight
No reaction will occur because necessary enzymes are missing
What is stomata
When the opening in plant leaves are designed to allow gaseous exchange without allowing excessive water loss
What are the 2 things required for photosynthesis to occur
Light and chlorophyll
The to materials that movie in and out a leaf through tiny pores of the leaf surface are
Oxygen and carbon dioxide
List 3 uses of the energy stored in ATP
Cell reproduction
Cell growth
Transport of substances in and out of cell
Two materials that move into a plant through the roots are
Minerals and water
Name the product of anaerobic respiration in human muscle cells
Lactic acid
Write the chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —-> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the anaerobic equation
Glucose —-> lactic energy + energy
C6H12O6 —–> 2C3H6O3 + energy
What are enzymes
Enzymes are complex protein molecules which act as biological catalyst. A catalyst is something which speeds up a chemical reaction without itself without being used up in the reaction.
Characteristics of enzymes (6)
- Protein nature
- Biological catalysts
- Act on reversible reaction
- Action of enzymes is specific
- Work best at a certain level of Ph and temperature
- Action of enzymes in affected by inhibitor
