CELL BIOLOGY Flashcards
cell division
what happens during meiosis
division that gives rise to gametes(sperm and egg cells).
4 haploid cells each containing only one chromosome
what happens in mitosis?
genetic identity of equal daughter cells.
what is the cell cyle?
its a sequence of growth, DNA replication, and cell division that all cells go through
name the different parts of the cell cycle?
interphase -G1 phase -S phase (DNA replication) -G2 phase M phase (mitosis) (cytokenesis)
what are kinases?
theyre enzmyes that transfer phosphate from ATP onto specific substrate protiens which can cause a confirmational change and often affects their activity.
what are the phases of mitosis?
prophase , prometaphase , metaphase, anaphase, telophase
what happens in prophase?
Chromatin condenses (can begin in G2) , centrioles divide and migrate, kinetochores , kinetochore fibres and spindles form/
what happens in prometaphase?
nuclear envolope breaks down , spindle has access to chromosomes.
what happens during metaphase?
initially , chromosomes are randomlu place in otion but come to lie halfway between spindle poles in METAPHASE PLATE
what happens during anaphase?
paired chromatids separate at their kinetochores and start to move along MTs to opposite poles
what happens during telophase?
daughter chromosomes arrive at poles, new nuclear envelope forms
what are the 3 classes of microtubules which make up the mitotic spindle?
spindle pole
replicated chromsome
kinetochore
what do kinetichores do?
they attach chromosomes to the mitotic spindle
