Cell Adaptation Flashcards
What is cell adaptation?
occurs when the cell homeostasis is distorted by stresses or pathologic stimuli
Adaptation can lead to 5 responses from the cells which are?
- Atrophy
- Hypertrophy
- Hyperplasia
- Metaplasia
- Dysplasia
What is atrophy?
Decrease in size and number of cells and their metabolic activity after normal growth has been reached (decreased protein synthesis and increased protein degradation)
Hypertrophy
Increased size of cells and their functions (synthesis of more organelles and structural proteins) ex: cardiomyocytes, neurons (Cells with little replication)
What disease is common in Main Coon cats?
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (Mutation in the MYBPC3 gene)
Hyperplasia
Increase in the number of cells of an organ
Metaplasia
Change in phenotype of a differentiated cell in response to chronic irritation can lead to neoplasia. Often in epithelial cells
Dysplasia
Abnormal development (mostly epithelial cells)
