Q

what are the patient/family education of cefazolin

A

because cefazolin and the other cephalosporins are similar to penicllin, follow the same guidelines for providing pt/family education to pt receiving penicillin. take medication exactly as prescribed until the entrie prescription is completed, despite the absence of symptoms. monitor for s/s of allergic response and stop the medication if any occur

Q

what are the ongoing assessment/evaluation of cefazolin

A

monitor pt for signs of superinfection and notify prescriber immediately to arrange for treatment if superinfection does occur

Q

what are the major differences btwn the generations of cephalosporins

A

their activity against gram-negative bacteria, their resistence to beta-lactamases, and their ability to distribute into cerebrospinal fluid

Q

what are the pharmacotherapeutics of cefazolin

A

treat many kinds of infections: skin, bone, heart, blood, respiratory tract, GI tract, sinus, ear, and urinary tract. also used for perioperative prophylaxis in surgeries involving the GI or genitourinary tracts, bones, and skin

Q

what is the pharmacodynamics of cefazolin

A

like penicillin G, has no direct effect on the body. cefazolin produces its bactericidal effects by binding with PBP’s, which disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis. like penicillin, it also activate autolysins, which results in additional damage to the cell wall, allowing the cell to swell and then burst from the osmotic pressure within the cell. like penicillins, it is most effective against cells undergoing active growth and division

Q

c/i and precautions of cefazolin

A

anyone with a known allergy to cefazolin. caution must be used in patients with renal failure and in pregnant or lactating pts. because of the structural similarities btwn cephalosporins and penicillins, pts who are allergic to one type of drug may experience cross-sensitivity to the other
