CE - Chapter 7 Vocabulary Flashcards
Ammeter
A device used to measure the current in a circuit (Pg. 239)
Ampere
The SI unit for measure electrical current (Pg. 239)
Battery
A combination of electrochemical cells (Pg. 243)
Circuit
A complete path in which electrons can flow; includes an energy source, electrical load, and conducting wires (Pg. 237)
Circuit Breaker
A safety device in which wire heats up and bends when there is excess current in the circuit, triggering a spring mechanism that turns off the flow of electricity (Pg. 263)
Circuit Diagram
A model used by engineers and designers in order to design and analyze an electrical circuit (Pg. 250)
Current Electrical Energy
The flow of electric charge in a circuit (Pg. 237)
Dry Cell
An electrochemical cell that uses paste instead of a liquid electrolyte; also called a primary cell (Pg. 243)
Electric Current
A measure of the amount of electrical charge that passes by a point in an electrical circuit in a given time interval (Pg. 239)
Electrochemical Cell
A package of chemicals that converts chemical energy into electrical energy that is stored in charged particles (Pg. 243)
Electrodes
A metal strip that reacts with an electrolyte (Pg. 243)
Electrolyte
A liquid or paste that contains chemicals that form ions and conducts electric charge (Pg. 234)
Fuse
A safety device in an electric circuit which has a metallic conductor with a low melting point compared to the circuit’s wires, and which melts where there is excess current in the circuit (Pg. 263)
Load
A device that converts electrical energy to another form of energy (Pg. 237)
Multimeter
A multifunctional meter that can function as an ammeter, ohmmeter, or voltmeter (Pg. 240)
