Pignan v. Rayas

A

Pignan is made from 2ha in the Pignan lieu-dit, planted in the 1980’s. Rayas comes from the oldest vines. Winemaking is identical. Total estate is 12ha, including 2ha of white.

Rayas: Vinification

A

Reds are not destemmed. Fermented in concrete and racked into enamel for malo, then aged in old foudre (450L, 600L, and 3300L).
Whites are vinified separately (clairette v. grenache) in demi-muids and then blended and aged in vat for 11mos.
Previously, whites were aged for 18mos (Jacques?)

A

1997, with Jacques’ death.
Emmanuel is Jacques’ nephew; he previously was working and vinifying Chateau des Tours, inherited from his father Bertrand.

A

The Beaucastel family’s history in Chateaunuef dates back to 1549. The winery as we know it today was established in 1909 with its purchase by Pierre Perrin.

Where is Beaucastel, and how many acres does it cover?

A

At the north eastern border, just below the bounday of the A7. 70ha within Chateauneuf in the lieux-dits Chapouin and Coudoulet; 25ha outside designated CdR. The northernly location means cooler temperatures and consequently more moderate alcohols than more southerly estates.

Beaucastel: Geology

A

Marine molasse (sandstone) covered by alluvials, including galets, with clay and then stony chalk subsoil. The water table varies across the estate, and varieties are planted according to depth of water v. the needs of the variety.

What is thermovinification, and who uses it in CDP?

A

Flash heating of the must to very high temperatures pre-fermentation - enhances extraction and also lends a juicy, candied character to the fruit.
Beaucastel, heating red grapes to 80C (176F) for 2 minutes before cooling to 20C.

What is Hommage a Jacques Perrin?

A

Beaucastel’s top wine, made only in exceptional years. Ususally a high % of mourvère, but will vary by vintage (e.g. 1998 was 60% Grenache and 20% mourvèdre). Aged in 1yo demi-muids for 12-18mos.

Réserve des Célestins: Grand Vin. First vintage 1927.
Cuvées are barrel selections, often only when ready to bottle. Célestins usually comes from La Crau; Marie Beurrier usually comes from clay/limestone and sandy soils.

Bonneau: Winemaking

A

Long barrel aging in foudre, demi-muid, and pièces, all at least 10 years old. Extended barrel aging - often 4-6 years.
Very late harvest - looking for ultimate ripeness.
No destemming unless absolutely necessary.
Will declassify or sell to the negoce if the vintage is not up to standard.

La Nerthe: History

A

May be 800 years old; written documentation dates to 1560.
The château was constructed in 1736; estate bottling began in 1784!
The estate went into decline post-phylloxera and during WWI and WWII. Purchased by the Richard Family and negociant firm David et Foillard (Burgundy) in 1985, the estate is now overseen by Alain Dugas.

A

Reds are destemmed, aged in equal parts new barrique, foudres, and concrete for 12-18mos.
Whites are destemmed and aged in a mix of tank and new oak barrique for 6mos.
Reds and White CDP are Grenache based.

A

Prestige cuvée from La Nerthe, made from old vines in good years, aged in 80% new barrique. First vintage 1970 - however, a Cuvée des Cadettes was produced in the late 1800’s as 100% Grenache.
