CD.11 Flashcards
Classifying organic reactions and devising synthetic routes
What is the general relationship between the number of step of a synthesis and its overall yield?
The more steps there are the lower the overall yield tend to be.
What is an addition reaction?
When two molecules react together to form a single product.
What is an elimination reaction?
When a small moleucles is removed from a larger molecule, leaving an unsaturated product.
What is a condensation reaction?
When two molecules react together to form a larger molecule, while a small molecule is removed. This is sometimes thought of as addition followed by elimination.
What is a substitution reaction?
When one group of atoms replaces another on a molecule.
What is an oxidation reaction in organic chemistry?
When oxygen atoms are gained or hydrogen atoms are lost.
What is a reduction reaction is organci chemistry?
When oxygen atoms are lost or hydrogen atoms are gained.
What is a hydrolysis reaction?
When bonds are broken due to the action of water molecules.
