9
Q

Describe a simple molecular, covalent substance

A

Atoms are joined by strong covalent bonds to form molecules. The molecules attracted to other molecules by weak intermolecular forces.

11
Q

Why are simple molecular substances liquids or gasses at room temperature?

A

Simple molecular substances melt at boil at low temperatures because it does not take much energy to overcome the weak intermolecular forces between molecules

12
Q

Why can’t simple molecular substances conduct electricity?

A

because they don’t have any electrons or ions which are free to move

13
Q

Why do ionic substances have high melting and boiling points?

16
Q

Why can ionic substances conduct electricity when molten or in solution but cannot when solids?

A

As solids the ions cannot move around but when molten or in solution the ions can move around

17
Q

Describe the structure of diamond. (What element is it made from? What type of bonds form? How many bonds does each atom make?)

A

Diamond is formed from carbon atoms which each have 4 covalent bonds to other carbon atoms

18
Q

Melting and boiling requires bonds to be broken

Why is diamond so strong and have such a high melting and boiling point?

A

Because each atom has 4 strong covalent bonds to other carbon atoms so it takes a lot of energy or a large force to break.

19
Q

Describe the structure of graphite. (What element is it made from? What type of bonds form? How many bonds does each atom make? What happens to carbon’s 4th outer shell electron?)

A

Graphite is formed from carbon atoms which each have 3 covalent bonds to other carbon atoms. Each carbon’s 4th outer shell electron becomes a delocalised electron.

20
Q

Why can graphite conduct electricity?

A

because 1 outer shell electron from each carbon becomes delocalised
