CC5 Flashcards
What is an ion ?
An ion is an element with a different amount of electrons to normal, therefore it will have a positive or negative charge
What does the group mean about the elements ion ?
The group f the element show how many electrons the element will gain or lose
How do you make an ion ?
To make an ion you must first draw out the atom using shells, look at the outer shell and either minus or plus electrons to make the outer shell full
.e.g. 3 outer shell (-3 electrons) so +3
7 outer shell (+1 electron) so -1
What is similar between all metal ions ?
They are all positive
What is similar to all non-metal ions ?
They are all negative
What is ionic bonding ?
Ionic bonding is bonding two ions together and making 1 neutral compound
How do you do ionic bonding ?
For ionic bonding the elements that are bonding must all have an overall charge that’s neutral, and at the end the equation must be balanced
What properties do ionic compounds have ?
High melting point and boiling points because of strong electrostatic forces and formed in a lattice, they conduct electricity when in solution or molten
What makes up an ionic compound ?
A non-metal and a Metal
