CC1 Flashcards
What is the name of the change from Gas to Solid?
Deposition.
What is the name of the change from Solid to Gas?
Sublimation.
What type of changes are state changes?
They are physical changes, which can be reversed, and the chemical properties of the substance do not change.
What is a physical change?
A change in which no new substances are formed, such as a change of state.
How are particles attracted to one another?
By weak forces of attraction.
What happens to the weak forces of attraction during melting?
There are many weak forces of attraction in a solid. Some of these are overcome during melting. The remaining attractive forces between particles in a liquid are overcome during evaporating and boiling.
What does it mean when the temperature stays constant (is flat) in a heating curve?
Solid–>Liquid: The temperature stays constant while the solid is melting. The substance is still being heated, but the added energy is making the particles break away from their fixed arrangement
Liquid–>Gas: The temperature stays constant while the liquid is boiling. The particles are escaping from the liquid to form a gas.
How can you predict the state of a substance (if you know the temperature, melting point and boiling point)?
- If it’s below the melting point, the substance is a solid.
- If it’s between the melting point and boiling point, the substance is liquid.
- If it’s above the melting point, the substance is a gas.
