Q

What type of changes are state changes?

A

They are physical changes, which can be reversed, and the chemical properties of the substance do not change.

Q

What happens to the weak forces of attraction during melting?

A

There are many weak forces of attraction in a solid. Some of these are overcome during melting. The remaining attractive forces between particles in a liquid are overcome during evaporating and boiling.

Q

What does it mean when the temperature stays constant (is flat) in a heating curve?

A

Solid–>Liquid: The temperature stays constant while the solid is melting. The substance is still being heated, but the added energy is making the particles break away from their fixed arrangement
Liquid–>Gas: The temperature stays constant while the liquid is boiling. The particles are escaping from the liquid to form a gas.

Q

How can you predict the state of a substance (if you know the temperature, melting point and boiling point)?

A
  1. If it’s below the melting point, the substance is a solid.
  2. If it’s between the melting point and boiling point, the substance is liquid.
  3. If it’s above the melting point, the substance is a gas.
