Opening description of Scrooge- described as a ‘sinner’
Ghost work to redeem or save from from the deadly sin of avarice (love of money). Concept of sinning= Ghost of Christmas Past= “bright clear jet of light” echoes Jesus Christ who was named the ‘Light of the world’ died to redeem mankind’s sin. Christianity was a cornerstone of Victorian society= audience would’ve recognised references to Christ
“I am quite a baby”
Links to the idea of Christian salvation- refers to being baptised and born again (free from any sin). Dickens uses the Christian religion as the basis for Scrooge’s spiritual journey of Redemption. Ghost of Christmas Past hold a torch- represents the Horn of Plenty (Greek and Roman mythology)- Dickens often criticised religious practices~ Sabbatarianism(keeping Sunday a strict day of rest)=poor
