CC Ghosts Flashcards
Ghost of Christmas yet to come
Ghost of disappear and disappointment- reflection of Scrooge -“silent shape”-social pariah. Individuate s by the gloomy presence= realisation of the darkness he casted upon society. Reflection of Scrooge’s future: silent and lonely death. The phantom foreshadows Scrooge’s unaltered future (doomed).
“Spirit neither spoke nor moved”
Grim reaper=fear of death=metamorphosis. Tiny Time dies= actions speak louder than words. Reflection of how the selfish upper-class citizens treated issues of poverty- did not act unlike the 'Portly Gentlemen"-as represented by the jovial generosity values of the Ghost of Christmas Present
“Shadows” “Silent Shape”
Unlike other ghost=Scrooge has an epiphany by being forged to witness his doom and face the truth of the consequences to his unjust actions. ‘S’ sibilants indicates trembling. S=sinister outcome= snake-venom- old attitudes expressed in Stave 1 is poison to society.
“Vague uncertain horror”
“Dusky shroud”
Does not know what to express and is afraid to witness what he has been blinded and ignorant to. Future is not set in stone= time to transform and cast away the shadows put on society “if these shadows remain unaltered, the child will die”(Ghost of Christmas Present)
“I fear you more than any spectre I have seen”
Admits fragility= in a vulnerable state= Dickens puts him in the position of those who are isolated not by choice within society. He wants his audience to know that Scrooge’s fear applies to them. End of the novel- audience exposed to dark consequence- avoided if they know their purpose through the Ghosts of Christmas in this novella.
Dickens “Ghost of an idea”
Moral value behind the ghosts=Ghost teach Dickens message that it is people that shape society- if only they leave their misanthropic approach and open themselves up like the true portrayal of the each Ghosts purpose. Dickens uses the ghosts to reinforce a sense of meaning and purpose of humanity- ghost- eternal- eternal impact on future generations. “May it haunt their houses pleasantly”- wants them to carry the message= stays with them. “No one wish to lay it”- may the message stay with them- not just a book but a change for redemption and transformation= Ghost are the opportunity of salvation (Scrooge was able to redeem himself through them)
Marley
Repetition “Marley was a dead as a door nail”- emphasises that when the readers see Marley= he will be a ghost. Theme of supernatural time travel. Dickens uses listing to describe Marley’s wretched appearance- reinforcing idea of eternal punishment and torture. Embodiment of social responsibility “mankind was my business”- people of society are stewards of the interdependent backbone of society. “I wear the chains I forged in life”-“doomed to wander through the world”= the life Scrooge was living was enough to set him to his doom if he continued to be like that. “Chains”=attachment- every u do has a string attached to the purpose of it= responsibility. Scrooge will be doomed to wander the world and witness the world in doom= purgatory=”doomed” Marley had been judged and condemned and cannot enter heaven. Phrases “wander” and “world”=slows down the sentence= slowed down time of the eternal length of Marley’s sentence- Marley clearly regrets his actions of caring for profits not people when he was alive- self gain.
The Ghost of Christmas Past
Personification of memory- brings to light many things Scrooge has forgotten. Light coming out the head- light coming out of heat- light that will confront Scrooge’a past and the choices that he has made=made away (not ignorant to his wrong-doings). Creature of contradiction (both old and young)- juxtaposition of contrasting in age/time= shows us that we are a product of our past and present=shaped by events. “I am not the man I was” “was white as if with age and yet the face had not a wrinkle on it”
“A bright clear jet of light”
Light=Symbol of hope for Scrooge to transform his miserly, misanthropic ways and cast a light upon the society he shadowed. The Ghost makes Scrooge feel remorse in a sense that he will face his fears from his past that has created the embodiment of his present fearful self
“Jolly giant”
Embodiment of jovial Christmas presence Dickens wants his audience to reenact on. Uses the Ghost to revive and establish the attitudes of how Christmas should be celebrated: feeling thankful and grateful- making the most of what u have and embracing it like it’s your last. Ghost of benevolence
“Plenty’s horn”
Cornucopia- Greek mythology- provides an endless supply of fruit. Richness and abundance= seen in the way the room has changed “living green” should be human nature to seek happiness. Mighty blaze in the fireplace conveys warmth and generosity= unlike Scrooge “no warmth could warm”- the Ghost is the warm mess he is missing in his heart- almost acts as a second conscience to how he should be making the most of Christmas by showing the Fezziwigs and the Cratchits
Ghost of Christmas Past
Personification of generosity. Coat is left open= heart is open to other people. Feet= symbolise natural values. “Cheery voice”- ability to make others happy= direct contrast with Scrooge “Bah humbug!” - just like Fred and Fezziwig, he is used to show the audience that the contrast shows that there is a choice in how u chose to live- one pointed finger by the ghost of Christmas yet to come= One-way to doom if u do not seek kindness. “FREE”- generosity is the source of our own happiness which makes us truly free
