What do they represent
Represent the poor and needy in society (destitution)
Fire/ warmth
Scrooge has a very small fire (small warmth in his heart). Clerk’s fire= so small= yet his warmth towards his family and values of Christmas show how valuable his heart is as it is a radiator of kindness to his family and society
Tiny Tim
He hoped people would see him in church to remember the person who was born on Christmas Day who made lame beggars walk and blind men see. Link to religion as a theme= Dickens big idea of having faith in God=healing= and redemption of Scrooge and aristocratic people in society. Tiny Tim is the embodiment of consequences of Scrooge’s actions=child-cripple-sympathy from readers=fragility is in the hands of Scrooge’s doomed fate
Mrs Cratchit
Makes an effort in her appearance despite being poor. Not agreeing with husband to be thankful to Scrooge “the founder of the feast” as he made them suffer- reluctant to join him as her husband isn’t rewarded for his efforts of hard work. Mrs Cratchit shows that some women at the one started to voice their opinions even though the suffragette movement was about the submerge
