Describe transient insomnia
Occurs in those that normally sleep well and may be due to extraneous factors such as:
- Noice
- Shift work
- Jet lag
If a hypnotic is indicated for a patient who has transient insomnia what factors should be considered about the drug ?
- Rapidly eliminated
- Only one or two doses should be given
Describe short-term insomnia
Usually related to an emotional problem or serious medical illness.
Usually lasts for a few weeks and may recur
If a hypnotic is given, what factors should be considered ?
- Should not be given for more than three weeks (preferably only one week)
- intermittent use with omission of some doses
- Short acting drug usually appropriate
Describe chronic insomnia
Usually caused by psychiatric disorders such as anxiety,d expression and abuse of drugs and alcohol. Can also be caused by mild dependence of i judicious prescribing of hypnotics
Are hypnotics affective in managing chronic insomnia ?
No, rarely beneficial
