CBE Biology Study Unit 1 Flashcards
Verified or falsified based on collected evidence.
Hypotheses
Variables that scientists control to test the effects on the dependent variables.
Independent variables
Variables affected by the changes made to the independent variable.
Dependent variables
Origin of all scientific inquiries.
Observation
Facts, statistics, and calculations used in scientific analysis
Data
A well-supported explanation of an occurrence of a natural phenomenon
Scientific Theory
A description of a natural phenomenon that is always observed to occur under specific conditions
Scientific Law
Is used to reach specific conclusions that follow directly and inevitably from well-defined statements.
Deductive Reasoning
Involves generalizing a set of precise statements, often based on examples or observations, to form probable explanations
Inductive Reasoning
Identical; exactly the same shape and size
Congruent
A statement used to build an argument and help reach a conclusion
Premise
The process of using a set of observations or evidence to offer a plausible explanation or conclusion
Inductive Reasoning
Data or an observation that has been shown to be accurate through multiple trials
Empirical Fact
A reasonable conclusion or explanation that is based on a set of evidence
Inference
A statement about the universe that is consistent, observable, predictable, and repeatable
Claim
Everything that can be observed or explained scientifically
Natural World
The procedure of scientific inquiry used to investigate natural phenomena
Scientific Method
Can be shown to be incorrect with appropriate evidence and experimentation
Falsifiable
Well-supported statement describing the behavior of objects or processes in well-defined circumstances.
Laws
All living things need energy to carry out basic life functions, such as breathing, movement, and reproduction.
Uses Energy
Homeostasis means internal balance. When changes occur in the environment, your body reacts by trying to maintain balance.
Can Regulate Homeostasis
Living things reproduce to create new organisms.
Reproduces
The compound light microscope uses two lenses to magnify the object.
Compound Microscope
The electron microscope uses a beam of electrons instead of light to magnify objects.
Electron Microscope
A unicellular or multicellular organism that has cells with a defined nucleus
Eukaryote
The largest organelle in the cell, which contains genetic information and controls cell function
Nucleus (of a cell)
A unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus
Prokaryote
A mixture of water and salt that suspends the organelles within the cell
Cytoplasm
An organelle that generates energy for a cell
Mitochondria
A cell structure responsible for the production of protein in a cell
Ribosome
