CB9-Ecosystems and Material Cycles Flashcards
Ecosystems
-An ecosystem is all the organisms and the environment in which they live
-Abundance is a measure of how common something is in an area, such as population size
-A community is all the organisms that live and interact together in an ecosystem
KEY FORMULA:
Population Size= Number of organisms in all quadrats X(Total size where organisms live/Total area of Quadrats)
A/biotic factors and Communities
- Abiotic factors are non-living factors affecting organisms such as temperature
- Biotic Factors are living factors affecting organisms such as predation, Disease
- Belt transects: A line in an environment which measures effect of abiotic factors on distribution
- Each species has certain adaptations that may allow it to survive. If the a/biotic factors changed it would affect distribution
Parasitism/Mutualism
-Parasitism is a feeding relationship where an organism(the parasite) benefits by feeding off a host organism, and causes harm to the host
-Mutualism is a relationship between individuals of different species where both benefit.
-Some parasites such as lice live on outside whereas some like tapeworms on inside
Examples:
M- Flower relying on insect for pollination
P- Lice, Tapeworm
