The process Where scientists remove a gene from one organism and insert it into another organism. To change its characteristics
What is the process of genetic engineering?
The DNA containing the desired gene is removed from the cell
Restriction enzymes are used to cut the desired gene out of the chromosome
The plasmids are then removed from the bacteria cell
the plasmids are cut open with restriction enzymes
The desired gene is inserted into each plasmid
the genetic engineers encourage the bacteria to accept the genetically modified plasmids
bacteria with the desired gene are then multiplied
As a result each bacterium will then contain the desired characteristics
How is Selective breeding used?
To increase yield To increase disease resistent organisms To make life easier To produce unique organisms for competition features For money
What are the advantages of genetic engineering and selective breeding?
It allows for a faster growth rate. It can create an extended life. Specific traits can be developed. New products can be created. Greater yields can be produced. Risks to the local water supply are reduced.
What are the disadvantages of selective breeding and genetic engineering?
The nutritional value of foods can be less.
There can be negative side effects that are unexpected.
