Cavities Flashcards
Dorsal Cavity
Cranial Contains the brain within the rigid skull Vertebral Also known as the spinal cavity. Within which the delicate spinal cord is protected by the bony vertebral column. These are continuous of each other because the spinal cord is a continuation of the brain.
Ventral Cavity
Thoracic (above diaphragm) This is the superior subdivided cavity of the ventral cavity. It is separated from the rest by the dome shaped diaphragm. The heart and lungs, located in the thoracic cavity, are protected by the bony rib cage.
Cranial Cavity
Contains the brain within the rigid skull
Vertebral Cavity
Also known as the spinal cavity. Within which the delicate spinal cord is protected by the bony vertebral column. These are continuous of each other because the spinal cord is a continuation of the brain.
Pleural cavities
Each enveloping a lung, and the medial mediastinum
Pericardial Cavity
This encloses the heart, and is found in the mediastinum. It also surrounds the remaining thoracic organs (esophagus, trachea and others). (within the mediastinum)
Mediastinum Cavity
(space between lungs) The second tier of the thoracic cavity. It contains the pericardial cavity.
Abdominopelvic Cavity
(below diaphragm) Abdominal Contains the stomach, intestines, spleen liver and other organs Pelvic Lies in the bony pelvis and contains the urinary bladder, some reproductive organs and the rectum.
