to asses the causes of war
Fuse one: Empires
an empire was a group of oversea territories controlled by another country. in 1900 the British and french had the largest empire but Germany and Italy also wanted oversea territories. this caused jealousy between the countries and the B and F were scared that the G and I would try invade some of their countries.
Fuse two: Arms race
the arms race was the race between G and B in building up their navies and armies. this caused tension between the countries because B felt they couldn’t trust G as there was a possibility they were preparing to overthrow some British colonies.
Fuse three: Alliances
in 1914 Europe was divided into 2 alliances, which were the triple alliance (Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary) and the triple entente (France, Britain, Russia) . Countries formed alliances because it showed rivals that they had power and allies would help sort out any problems between countries. This lead to a rise in tension because the 2 alliances became suspicious of each other due to more quarrels over colonies.
what was the last cause which lead to war?
of June 1914 Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand on Appelquay street who was heir to the throne and his wife Sophie. Austria- Hungary blamed Serbia for this.
what was the aim of the Black Hand Gang?
to re-create Great Serbia
what aspects of the Gangs plan failed?
initially they were each going to attempt to assassin the Archduke and once they had attempted they would all commit suicide by drinking synide. Cabrinovic attempted suicide but it failed and he was arrested.
how was a sandwhich the cause of WW1?
once they had tried to be killed several times the driver of the car with Archduke in took a different route where there was also Princip who had come out of the shop after buying a sandwhich. it was here where Princip decided to shoot A and his wife.
