Abraham Lincoln
A moderate in the 1860 election, won the electoral vote but not the popular vote, called for volunteer soldiers after Fort Sumter attack, divided Virginia in to two states, declared martial law in Missouri, jailed pro-secession leaders
“Bleeding Kansas”
A Kansas and Missouri war, Missourians burnt down Lawerence, John Brown killed 5 men at the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre
Compromise of 1850
To avoid war, Congress agreed that New Mexico and Utah would vote on slavery (popular sovereignty) the Fugitive Slave Law passes, California becomes a free state, slavery is legal in D.C., but the slave trade is illegal, lasted for four years
Dred Scott v. Sanford
Scott sued for his freedom, the Supreme Court ruled that Scott was a slave, not a citizen, so he could not sue in an US Court, also Scott is Property and owners cannot be denied the right to their property
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Kansas and Nebraska will vote on slavery, and a railroad will go through Northern states
Raid on Harper’s Ferry
John Brown led a slave revolt who attacked a Federal Arsenal in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia in 1859, it was suppressed by Robert E. Lee
Border Ruffians
Missourians who voted illegally on the Kansas Stat Constitution for pro-slavery
Fort Sumter
A US fort in the South Carolina harbor that was out of supplies, Lincoln sent unarmed supply ships, other forts opened fire on the ship, Sumter surrendered 24 hours later
