causes of social inequality Flashcards
family structure
families with children are more likely to be poorer than people without.
costs go up as a child is born as families may reduce their hours at work to look after heir child.
for example:
estimated that 30,000 children in Scotland live in severe poverty live in households with 3 or more children.
unemployment
unemployment is defined as a situation where someone of working age is not able to get a job but is seeking and would like to be in full-time employment.
for example:
around 72% of children living in severe poverty in scotland live within these households where the parents do not work and it is this that has been identified as the main cause of severe poverty.
gender
undervaluing of what is sometimes called ‘womens work’ where jobs traditionally done by women (such as nursing ) are paid less than jobs where men dominate (such as mechanics)
