Causes of memory loss Flashcards
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)
Caused by trauma
Progressive brain disease caused by repeated head injuries, and results in death of nerve cells - this is thought to lead to development of memory problems
How does CTE impact behaviour?
CTE may cause impulsive behaviour, confusion due to memory loss, and slurred speech
How does CTE impact emotion
CTE may cause emotional instability in the form of intense mood swings, and symptoms of depressions
Alzheimer’s disease
Caused by degeneration - widespread damage (neurons stop functioning properly, lose synaptic connections, and eventually die)
How does Alzheimer’s disease impact behaviour?
Alzheimer’s may lead to getting easily agitation, getting lost or disoriented
How does Alzheimer’s disease impacts emotion
Alzheimer’s may lead to abrupt changes in mood for no obvious reason, and feeling fearful or suspicious
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS)
Induced by drug use (alcohol)
Rare neurological disorder caused by thiamine deficiency - leads to degeneration of brain cells and characterised by difficulties forming new memories and retrieving stored memories
How does WKS impact behaviour?
WKS may lead to repeating the same questions or stories, and involuntary rapid/repetitive eye movements
How does WKS impact emotion?
WKS may lead to memory deficits (feelings of frustration), and feeling anxious
