Behaviour Modification Flashcards
1
Q
Systematic desensitisation
A
A behavioural therapy technique used to treat phobias and anxiety disorders by gradually exposing the individual to the feared object or situation in a controlled manner to reduce fear and anxiety responses.
2
Q
What is the process of systematic desensitisation?
A
- Gather information: extent of problem, source of problem, generate a list of fear-provoking stimuli
- List stimuli in hierarchal order
- Begin Graded Exposure: teach patient relaxation techniques
- Introduce least-fear provoking stimuli first
- Continue moving through the hierarchy until most fear-provoking stimuli are introduced and the patient can remain calm
- If the patient is too overwhelmed with a level and cannot return to relaxed state, can return to previous levels until relaxed again.
3
