why is this a surgical emergency
A
prolonged compression can cause permanent damage

presentation
A
bilateral lower motor neurone signs
bladder and bowel dysfunction
saddle anaesthesia
loss of anal tone

diagnosis
A
PR examination
MRI to determine level fo prolapse

management
A
urgent discectomy (significant number of patients still have permanent bladder and bowel dysfunction)
