Q

Describe the flame tests for cation ions (In this case metal ions)

A

Clean a platinum wire loop by dipping it in DILUTE HYDROCHLORIC ACID and then holding it in a flame, once the you hold in the loop in the flame and IT BURNS WITHOUT ANY COLOUR you can dip it into the sample you want to test and then put it back in the flame and observe the new COLOUR OR THE FLAME.

10
Q

Describe the sodium hydroxide test.

A

Add a few drops of SODIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTION to a solution of your unknown compund. If you get a COLOUR PRECIPITATE you can tell which metal was in the compound.

11
Q

What is the coloured precipitate and how is it formed?

A

insoluable metal hydroxide, it is formed by the metal ions reacting with the sodium hydroxide.

Q

what is the equation for iron (ll)

A

Fe2+ (aq) + 2OH-(aq) > Fe(OH)2

17
Q

what is the equation for iron (lll)

A

Fe3+ (ap) + 3OH-(aq) > Fe(OH)3

18
Q

Ammonium compund + ‘what’ gives off ammounia gas?

A

sodium hydroxide

19
Q

Describe the test for ammonium ions

A

Add some SODIUM HYDROXIDE to a solution of your unknown subtance. If there’s AMMONIA GAS given off this means there are AMMONIUM IONS in your mystery subtance

20
Q

what would you check for ammonia gas?

A

RED litmus paper turns BLUE

21
Q

What is one other property of ammonia gas?

A

It smells strongly
