Quote suggesting God is Transcendent and explain

A
  • “Then God said, ‘let there be light’; and there was light” - Genesis 1:3

Q

Suggest how God is Creator?

A
  • God is the only creator who has created anything, this is significant for Christians as it means they should worship only this one god
  • All of creation is special, because all of it has been created by God. Therefore it should be cared for and looked after
  • Genesis 1:27 shows that God created humans in his image, meaning humans share qualities with God. These qualities allow a close relationship with God

  • Image of God
  • Genesis 2:8 explains how God made humans in his image

Q

Explain Dignity

A
  • Genesis 1 states God made humans “in his image”, meaning all humans are equal because we have all been created by God and share qualities of God
  • For Catholics this means that all people have dignity - they are worthy of honour and respect

Q

Explain Free Will

A
  • Humans have the gift of Free Will - meaning they are able to make choices for themselves
  • God commands Adam not to eat from the tree but does not actively prevent him doing so, giving him free will
  • Using free will in away that pleases God brings humans closer to God
19
Q

Explain Stewardship

A
  • In Genesis 1:28, God tells Adam and Eve to “subdue” the earth and “have dominion” over every living thing. This suggests that humans have been given power and authority to rule over all other creatures
  • In Genesis 2:15, God puts Adam in the Garden of Eden to “till it and keep it” - this suggests looking after the world with care and love
  • This teaches Christians they have a duty to look after the environment of behalf of God
  • Christians believe that the world is a gift from God, but God expects them to protect and care for the world in return
20
Q

What is Natural Law?

A

Natural Law is the idea that humans are born with an understanding of what is right and what is wrong

21
Q

What are the 2 basic natural laws?

A
  • “Do good and avoid evil”

- “Protect and preserve life”

22
Q

What are the links with Natural Law and human beliefs?

A
  • That humans are made in the image of God, therefore they share God’s Goodness
  • God made all creation good
23
Q

Why should Catholics live according to Natural Law?

A
  • Because it is part of God’s will for humans. God built humans with an in-built moral code, so humans should follow it
  • Humans should not need rules to tell them what is right and wrong. They should know this intuitively
24
Q

Why shouldn’t Catholics live according to Natural Law?

A
  • Humans should now follow legal law rather than relying on natural law
  • Natural law is not relevant in modern society as people are taught by society what is right and wrong that than relying on natural instinct
25
Q

What are Fundamentalist Christians?

A

Christians which interpret Genesis literally, they do not accept it as a myth and they believe that it actually happened

26
Q

What do Fundamentalist Christians believe?

A
  • The Bible is the word of God and so must be accurate in all respects
  • God has informed humanity of his truth
  • Since God loves all humans, he will not mislead people by giving incorrect information
  • Humans have no right to prefer their own interpretations to the actual words of God
27
Q

How does the Catholic Church interpret Genesis?

A
  • The catholic church teaches that the creation story is a myth, however not such that it is a lie
  • The creation story teaches valuable stories to early Christians about the nature of God and the nature of Humans
  • The Catholic church teaches that God Created the universe and humans through the big bang and evolution
28
Q

What are 2 examples of Religious Art in Creation?

A
  • Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam

- “Hand of God” by Hildreth Meiere

29
Q

What beliefs does Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam express?

A
  • God and Adam are lying in similar positions, showing that humans are made in the image of God
  • God is in a brain shaped cloud - symbolising that god is omniscient and that all out intelligence comes from God
  • Adam’s hand reaching out to God represents that Adam is not fully alive and depends on God for life
  • God is being carried through the air by angels, reflecting that God is transcendent - whereas Adam is firmly on the ground
  • Adam is the perfect human - full of strength - reflecting that God’s creation is “very good” and humans are the highpoint of God’s creation
30
Q

What Criticisms does Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam express?

A
  • It does not say in Genesis that God touches Adam to give him life, however that seems to be depicted in the artwork
  • God and Adam are the same size - this seems to suggest that man is equal to God
  • God should not be portrayed as and old man - God is pure spirit
31
Q

What beliefs does Hand of God express?

A
  • God’s hand is large compared to the size of the cloud - helps show God’s greatness and power
  • Lines extend from God’s hand to the edge of the circle (which depicts the universe). This reflects the idea that God created everything in the universe and that his influence and power touch all things
32
Q

What Criticisms does Hand of God express?

A
  • Some Christians are uneasy about the depiction of the hand, as they think this suggests God is like humans only in a much bigger form
33
Q

A

The role of the Magisterium is to interpret scriptures and tradition

36
Q

Give a quote on interpreting the Bible - Second Vatican council:

A

“When interpreting the Bible, you should carefully investigate the meaning the writers intended”

37
Q

Explain how science and religion support each other in the Catholic Church?

A
  • Science attempts to explain how the universe came about and religion attempts to explain why it came about.
  • Science and religion should be viewed as a pair of 3D glasses, one in each lens, without the other you are unable to see the full complete picture.
  • There has been many famous Catholic scientists, such as George Lemaitre who devised a Big Bang model, this shows that they don not contradict each other
38
Q

Why should humans be stewards?

A
  • The Earth is God’s gift to humanity, we do not own the earth we are simply looking after it on behalf of God
  • It is a way to “Love thy neighbour” - the people we share the planet with. We show love for God by taking care of his creation. Damage affects everyone, especially future generations.
