catheter care and placement Flashcards
iv catheters are used for
fluids, medication, monitor central venous pressure, access port for emergencies, anesthetics, blood transfusions
what you need for a catheter
catheter, gauze, tape, flush, t-port, mal-adapter plug, IV administration set, extension set, burette, fluid pump
catheter size =
smaller the number, the bigger the bore
occlusion
blocked catheter
thrombophlebitis
inflammation of the vein
catheters can leak into…
subcutaneous tissues
pyrogenic
cause fevers
circulatory overload
too much fluids or given too fast
4 veins accessible for IV catheterization
jugular, cephalic, lateral saphenous, femoral
sweling above catheter
usually subcutaneous leakage from catheter
swelling below cather
usually a tight bandage
always have a cone on a catheterized patient why?
to help avoid them pulling the catheter out
symptoms of catheter contamination/infection
unexplained fever, hardness, swelling, pain, discharge, redness, lameness = inflammation
a central line has
direct communication with the vena cava
