Cat 1 Flashcards
Why do we need specific training for Cat 1?
MLIT has decided in a circular that pilots and companies engaged in Air Transport operations must conduct training for Cat 1 operations.
Other operators may use state minima.
What is Cat 1?
DH at or above 200 ft
RVR/CMV at or above 550 m
What is RVR ?
Range a pilot on the center line of a runway can see the runway surface markings or lights .
Measured with a forward-scatter meter
What is Converted Meteorological Visibility (CMV) ?
Derived from reported meteorological VISIBILITY.
Applied only when RVR is not available.
What ground facilities are required for Cat 1 operations?
- Localizer
- Glideslope
- Outer Marker (unless not required)
- Middle Marker or DME
- PALS
What are the twp types of Approach Lighting Systems used for Cat 1?
- ALSF 1 / ALSF 2
- Calvert
What is the minimum and maximum RVR that can be measured using regular equipment?
Minimum 200 meters (reported as M200)
Maximum 1800 meters (reported as P1800)
What equipment must be on board and serviceable to conduct CAT1 ?
- ILS receiver x 1
- Suitable displays for both pilots (2 PFDs)
- Suitable failure annunciators for each pilot (GS/LOC Flags + ECAM for Receiver fail)
- Marker Beacon ( not required in Japan)
- DME x 1
- ADF x 1 (not required in Japan)
- Flight Director or Autopilot
For CAT 1 ops without FD / AP what is the minima ?
RVR / CMV at or above 1000 m
DA - no change
If both RAD ALTs have failed can you do CAT 1 approach?
No because no FD or AP in Direct Law.
Minimum 1000 m RVR
What is the Auto pilot limitation for ILS approach?
160 ft AGL
On the A320 how is the ILS identified?
By the IDENT and Frequency displayed on the bottom left of the PFD.
What are the four categories of lighting facilities ?
- Full Facility - RCLM, 720m or more ALS, REDL, and RTHL.
- Intermediate Facility - RCLM, 420 - 719 m ALS, REDL, RTHL
- Basic Facility - RCLM, ALS less than 420 m with cross bar, REDL, RTHL
- NIL - basic facility not met
What methods of rain removal are available
- Windshield wipers (Max 230 KIAS)
- Rain Repellant
In case of ILS 2 receiver failure?
- LOC and GS flags appear on PFD 2
- Select Mode Select to ROSE MODE
- ILS 1 info will be available on ND2 (crossover arrangement)
What are the company minima for qualified CAT 1 Captains
What are the ILS minima for Other than CAT 1 Captains
DH 250 - RVR 1200 m
When may CMV be used?
(3)
- When RVR is not available
- Destination only - not at Alternate
- Not to be used at flight planning stage
When does the Approach Ban commence?
From commencement of the instrument approach.
(After FAF for ILS)
If RVR / CMV is expected to become below 1000 m what adjust must be made to the required landing distance?
Required Landing Distance must be at least 1.15 x Landing Field Length
What conditions must be satisfied to perform a CAT 1 approach?
- When RVR/CMV is expected to be below 1000m RLD must be increased to at least 1.15 x Field Length
- RA should not be used in place of baro altimeter
- PIC must be qualified CAT 1 capt and FO must have received training
- When RVR / CMV is below 1200m max cross wind is 15 kt
What is the max crosswind limit when RVR/CMV is below 1200m?
15 kts
What are the factors for deriving CMV?
