Casualty Assessment Flashcards
In Airway if there is an absence of breathing what could this imply?
This can be caused by a total blockage check for foreign objects - loose teeth or food, fluid - (vomit, blood, mucus or excess saliva) and
swelling - caused by burns, injury, or allergic reaction
What is D R A B C D E?
D = Danger R = Response A = Airway B = Breathing C = CPR D = Dysfunction E = Extras
How do you assess breathing
Once the airway has been stabilised the responder must make an accurate evaluation of the casualty’s breathing status.
Initially look, listen and feel:
look for chest movement
listen for breath sounds
feel for air on your cheek
Assess for up to 10 seconds to determine if the casualty is breathing normally.
The normal respiration rate for
1) An adult
2) A child
1) 12-20 Breaths per minute
2) children are variable
Name five things you must observe in a casualties breathing
1) . skin colour
2) rate
3) depth
4) regularity
5) chest movement
What do you check for in circulation
Skin colour Temperature Pulse Capillary refill Sign of shock Any visible signs of bleeding
If you start CPR how many rescue breaths to chest compressions
Adult 30 chest 2 rescue breaths, with a child start with 5 rescue breaths then 30/2
Define an infant and a child for medical purposes
An infant is under the age of 1 year.
A child is aged between 1 year and puberty.

Blueness (cyanosis) of the skin, affecting lips, mouth, neck, chest and under the eyelids.Dilated (large) pupils.
What is AVPU
Alert
Vocal Response
Pain
Unresponsive
(Airway checks) If you hear gurgling what can this mean?
Partial obstruction of the upper airway caused by fluid
(Airway checks) if you observe snoring sounds what could this imply?
Partial obstruction of the upper airway commonly caused by the tongue
(Airway Checks) If you observe grunting sounds what does this mean?
Partial obstruction to the lower part of the upper airway commonly caused by swelling or foreign bodies
(Airway checks) if you hear wheezing what can this mean?
This indicates narrowing of the lower airways commonly caused by swelling, inflammation or fluid
