Casts and Wraps Flashcards
What are some indications for immobilization?
fractures, sprains, severe soft tissue injuries, reduced joint dislocations, tendon lacerations, inflammatory conditions, deep laceration repairs across joints
which allows for greater stabilization- casts or splints?
casts
which allows for edema- casts or splints?
splint
which has a higher exothermic reaction- plaster or fiberglass?
plaster
what factors speed up setting times for casts and splints?
- higher temp of dipping water
- use of fiberglass
- reuse of dipping water
what factors slow down setting times for casts and splints?
- cooler temp of dipping water
- use of plaster
what are some complications of cast or splint immobilization?
- compartment syndrome
- ischemia
- heat injury
- pressure sores and skin breakdown
- infection
- dermatitis
- joint stiffness
- neurologic injury
how many fiberglass casts do you use when applying a cast?
3
how many fiberglass casts do you use when applying a splint?
1
what is the difference btwn WB and NWB cast?
WB cast must be at 90 deg
and should apply accordian layer of 3 inch fiberglass roll the length of the foot plantarly
what are some risk factors for cast complication?
- local anesthesia
- neuropathy
- communication difficulties
- chronic edema
- improperly applied cast
- cold dipping water
what are indications for JOnes compression wrap?
- sprains
- acute fractures
- venous stasis
what does one layer of Jones compression consist of?
1 roll of cast padding + ace wrap on foot & leg
what is an unna boot?
zinc oxide impregnated gauze wrap
what are indications for unna boot?
- venous stasis ulcers
- edema control (sprains or acute injuries)
- more tolerable in hot climates
