Casts Flashcards

1
Q

Cylindruria

A
  • Mucoprotein from the kidney tubules accumulates and forms a ‘gel like’ cast
  • Formed in the loop of Henle, distal tubules, and collecting ducts
  • Elements become incorporated with the’gel’
  • Dislodge and wash into the urine
  • Named for elements found within

Q

Hyaline casts

A
  • Clear, colorless cylinders
  • Use low power to see
  • Composed of protein
  • Increased numbers indicate mildest form of renal irritation
  • Also increased with fever, poor renal perfusion, strenous exercise, or general anethesia

Q

Granular

Casts

A
  • Hyaline casts containing granules
  • From tubular epithelial cells, RBCs, or WBCs that become incorporated in cast then degenerated
  • Seen in large numbers indicates acute nephritis and more severe kidney damage
  • Most common cast seen in animals
