Casts Flashcards
1
Q
Cylindruria
A
- Mucoprotein from the kidney tubules accumulates and forms a ‘gel like’ cast
- Formed in the loop of Henle, distal tubules, and collecting ducts
- Elements become incorporated with the’gel’
- Dislodge and wash into the urine
- Named for elements found within
2
Q
Hyaline casts
A
- Clear, colorless cylinders
- Use low power to see
- Composed of protein
- Increased numbers indicate mildest form of renal irritation
- Also increased with fever, poor renal perfusion, strenous exercise, or general anethesia
3
Q
Granular
Casts
A
- Hyaline casts containing granules
- From tubular epithelial cells, RBCs, or WBCs that become incorporated in cast then degenerated
- Seen in large numbers indicates acute nephritis and more severe kidney damage
- Most common cast seen in animals
4
Q
Waxy
Casts
A
- Irregular outline
- “Old” casts often indicate renal failure
- Colorless or gray and highly refractile
5
Q
Fatty
Casts
A
- Oval fat bodies
- Accumulation of lipids
- Highly refractile
- Frequently seen in cats with renal disease
- Occasionally seen in dogs with diabetes
