Castration of piglets with inguinal hernia + Teasing animal Flashcards
If the piglet suffers from hernia, how old is the piglet when we perform the castration?
around the time of weaning, 3-4 weeks of age
Which type of anaesthesia would we use in piglets with haernia?
always use general anaesthesia combined with local anaesthesia under the skin and in the testicle
How do we perform the castration in piglets with haernia?
We do a paramedian skin cut on the inguinal region, but be careful to not cut into the tunictunica vaginalis communis.
After we have removed the testicle from the cavity, we start to twist the tunic and sac, so the tunic narrows and the intestines have nowhere to go other than into the abdominal cavity.
Once the tunic is free we make a ligature on it, around the spermatic cord near the external inguinal ring, we then cut off the sac on the testicle side of the suture to remove the testicle and suture the skin.
The sutures is removed 10 days later
What is a teasing animal?
a term describing a boar whose reproductive system has been surgically altered to render him sterile
Which candidates makes the best teasing animals?
a healthy male or androgenised female with a high libido.
Normal sexual behaviour, and is incapable of impregnating females. Sexually mature and young, virgin, animals are the best candidates as a teasing animal
What is the ideal teasing animal?
free of disease, have a normal and high sexual behaviour.
It also needs to be small enough to use for immature females (gilts), yet large enough to use for mature females (sow).
Preferably the animal has a distinct colour or colour pattern that is different from the rest of the herd, and the animal has a high degree of libido
It is also important that the animal is friendly and non-aggressive, not very common.
What does libido mean?
sexual desire
(kjønnsdrift, seksuelt begjær)
How many procedures to make a boar a teasing animal?
The ideal procedure is simple and rapid, it shouldn’t cause pain to maintain the libido. It should produce minimal postoperative complications and require a minimal postoperative recovery period.
There are 2 ways: Procedures that block the flow of semen and procedures that prevent penile penetration
Which procedures are done to block the flow of semen?
Vasectomy and epididymectomy
Which procedures are done to prevent penile penetration?
a) Translocation of penis
b) The penis is sutured to an abnormal location
c) Part of the penis is removed
d) The prepuce is mechanically blocked to prevent the extension of the penis
What do we call the translocation of the penis?
Preputial translocation
What do we call it when the penis is sutured to an abnormal location?
Penopexy
What do we call it when part of the penis is removed?
Penectomy
What do we call it when the prepuce is mechanically blocked to prevent the extension of the penis?
Preputial block
