How is the NOMINATIVE case used?
The nominative case is used with the subject of the sentence.

How is the ACCUSATIVE case used?
The accusative case is used with the direct object of the sentence and with certain prepositions.
Der Mann wirft den Ball

How is the DATIVE case used?
The dative case is used with the indirect object of the sentence and with certain prepositions.
Der Mann wirft den Ball zum Hund
The man throws the ball to the dog
(zum is the short version of zu dem)
How is the GENITIVE case used?
The genitive case is used to denote possession and with certain prepositions.
Der Mann wirft den Ball der Mädchen zum Hund
The man throws the girl’s ball to the dog
(zum is the short version of zu dem)
