Cases Flashcards
52 y/o patient presents to your GP surgery with a blood pressure of 142/92mmHg. This is the first time this patient has presented with hypertension. What is your first line treatment?
ACE Inhibitor. If this isn’t tolerated, prescribe a low-cost ARB.
You prescribe a patient with an ACE Inhibitor for their hypertension, in three weeks time they come back, wanting to change their treatment as they have been struggling with side-effects. What is the most common side effect of this drug?
Cough
A 25 y/o patient presents to you with a blood pressure of 150/90mmHg. During your history taking you note that this patient has Afro-Carribean origins. How would you treat this patient and why?
A calcium channel blocker. All patients of Afro-Carribean descent should be treated with calcium channel blockers regardless of age.
A male patient presents to your surgery with a blood pressure of 147/96mmHg. This patient is 63 and has never been diagnosed with hypertension before but does show signs of oedema. What drug would you prescribe to treat his hypertension?
A thiazide-like diuretic. A calcium channel blocker would not be suitable but would be the first port of call for a similiar patient without oedema or signs of heart failure.
A 28 year old female lady presents to your surgery in her second trimester of pregnancy for a pre-natal check up. On examination she has a blood pressure of 160/85mmHg. What anti-hypertensive agent would you prescribe?
Labetalol
Methyldopa
Nifedipine
