Case Unit 3 - Screens Flashcards
1
Q
What is an assay?
A
Simply a test to measure for something
2
Q
What is a screen?
A
Process of testing many things at once using an assay (need for scalability)
3
Q
What are the advantages of using a screen?
A
Don’t need to know anything
Only identify things that work
Quick and free from bias
4
Q
Describe the steps to complete an artificial genetic screen
A
- Decide which process you want to investigate
- Choose a model organism e.g. yeast, worm, zebrafish, drosophila
- Mutate genes
- See if the process still works
- If not, identify the mutated genes
- Can reintroduce wt gene to see if rescue event occurs
5
Q
How can we mutate/break individual genes?
A
RNAi - knocks down mRNA
CRISPR
