Where is Stratford?
England, East London. In the London Borough of Newham.
Why did Stratford need regeneration?
-After docks closed in 1981 120,000 jobs were lost.
-60% of males in the area were unemployed.
-Caused spiral of deprivation/decline, high crime rates, many left area, little investment
How was the regeneration funded?
-64% central gov, 23% national lottery, 13% mayor of London.
How was it regenerated?
-Jubilee line built, connecting to central London-> job opportunity’s
-West ham stadium, 80,000 seater
-97% of demolished materials were re-used in the construction of the Olympic park
-Large open green spaces
-Created 50,000 long term jobs
-Proposed to make Olympic village into 3000 affordable homes after Olympics.
Was the regeneration a success?
NO
-Only 1200 affordable homes made from village
-Wind turbine providing 20% of energy scrapped
-Cost of living increased, eg by 69% in Hackney
YES
-31,000 additional jobs made
-BMX track open to public, attracts 80,000/year
-River was reprofiled, protects 400 homes for 100 years
