Q

What disorder does MR Suffer from?

A

Ideomotor apraxia, in which there is a disorder in the execution of motor tasks which is likely due to the dissociation between the mental representations of an ability an the execution

Q

What tasks were used to test MR?

A

Slicing bread task

Gave graded cues from verbal “pretend you’re slicing bread” to a load of bread, a knife and then both.

Q

In the slicing bread task what hand did every have to use to slice the bread and why?

A

Left hand
Because then any deficits in the apraxic patients would be due to a disorder of high level movement control rather than muscle weakness or incoordination

Q

There are two hypotheses, the disconnection hypothesis and the motor memory hypothesis, which one does MRs results support?

A

Motor memory hypothesis because the representations for skilled motor abilities have been lost when you destroyed the spatial -temporal movement representations in the parietal lobe.

Q

What were the cutting motions of apraxic patients like? What does this suggest the impairment is?

A

Circular and less planar. Impairment in spatial Accuracy

They also couldn’t maintain the relationship between hand speed and curvature even when given all the contextual cues.

Q

Could apraxics do any of the conditions of the bread slicing task ? When was their ability improved?

A

No they couldn’t do any showing that it can’t have disconnection hypothesis because it as the just the command verbal condition that they couldn’t do.

Performance improved very slightly when given the implements but not by much.
