Case study Flashcards
1
Q
Sample:
A
- Henry Molaison (HM) - lost memory at operating table , when neurosurgeon removed his hippocampus
- was 27 and suffered epileptic seizures for many years
2
Q
Experiments
A
- for 55 years participated in experiments
- suffered from retrograde memory loss
- could not learn new words, songs or faces after surgery
- never again clearly remembered an event eg his birthday party
- retained ability to learn new motor skills such as becoming faster at drawing a path through a maze, or learning to use walking frame, but this was done at an subconscious level
3
Q
Conclusion
A
- measure time by our memories, it was asif it stopped for Henry when he was 16 years old, 11 years before hiss surgery
- could sit doing crossword puzzles when done the same ones again they would seem new to him each time

Q
Evaluation
A
generalisability -doesnt give clear generalisable idea of how memory works and the way in which others may respond to damage to the hippocampus
Reliability - no standardised procedures were not used, this is because it was a unique case and they didn’t realise the hippo-campus was needed for memory, results cannot be replicated
Validity - all experiments collected both quantitive and qualitative data making the study valid, large quantities of data collected so gave clear view of how memory changed
Ethics - ethical because HM’s condition was naturally occuring, he wasnt forced into the operation, no ethical guidelines were broken
