Case Studies Flashcards
What is a case study
In depth piece of research on one instance of something e.g. an individual or a single subculture. It usually;y uses qualitative methods
Give 2 examples of a case study
Weber= studied Calvinism (a type of Protestant Christianity) and how it contributed to the development of capitalism in the 1800s.
Willis = he studied a single subculture of boys as they transitioned for school to work
What is a theoretical problem with case studies
Not representative as we can’t generalise the findings of small scale research to wider populations. As what we find in one case may not be true for others
What are the theoretical advantages of case studies
The data is valid as they use qualitative methods like interviews and they gather detailed insight into one instance of something this detail therefore increases they validity of the results
