Q

how does hypertension affect periodontitis

A
  • can contribute to the development and severity of periodontitis
  • causes changes in blood flow and microcirculation within the gums, leading to tissue damage and inflammation,
  • creates an environment where gum disease can more easily progress
  • this connection is largely due to the shared inflammatory pathway between the two conditions, where both can trigger the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the body

Q

how does amlodipine affect periodntitis

A

It is calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension
- can negatively impact periodontitis by causing gingival overgrowth
- can worsen existing periodontal disease by making it harder to maintain proper oral hygiene and potentially leading to increased plaque accumulation and inflammation around the gums
- this effect is more pronounced in patients with poor dental hygiene already present.

Q

How does amlodipine cause gingival overgrowth

A
  • Amlodipine reduces Calcium cell influx
  • This leads to reduction in the uptake of folic acid
  • This limits the production of active collagenase.
  • Because of reduction in degradation, collagen accumulates in connective tissue matrix of gingiva.
