case 5 Flashcards
What is selective attention
Selective attention is the process by which the mind selects from among the various stimuli that strike the senses at any given moment. (little bit bottleneck) it allows only information to enter consciousness
Explain the attentional filter.
Sensory input –> Early selection –> late selection –>response
Early selection
- Registration
- Perceptual analysis
late selection
- Sematic encoding/analysis
- Executive functions
- Decisions memory, etc.
What is dichotic listening?
You can focus on one conversation, while filtering out irrelevant noise , but silent information (example your name) is sometimes consciously perceived.) (moray 1959)
what is covert attention
focusing on something without physically orienting toward it.
shifts do not change sensory input itself, but how input is
processed: you dial up or down the neural processing of
certain input
What is overt attention?
5- orientating toward important information using eye or head movements. Shifts change sensory input.
