case 3 Flashcards
give an explenation about sensation and perception.
information about the physical world is transformed into neural signals
(Sensation) which are then interpreted by the brain (Perception)
what is bottom- up processing?
(from down to up) taking sensory information and then assembling? integratin it.
What is perceptual constancy ?
ability of perceptual systems to recognise the same object from widely varying sensory input
what is top-down processing?
(from the brain top) use knowledge, motivation and expectations to interpret sensory information.
theories of perception what is common and what is different?
Common across theories of perception:
- perception is not the passive receipt of sensory input
- our brain constantly interprets sensory information to form meaningful patterns
Different:
- Gestalt psychology: stress innateness of grouping principles
- Modern view: large role for experience
- Bayesian inference: express role of experience mathematically, in terms of probabilities
what are the steps of peception ?
-1 stimulus in the environment ((it is called distal bcs it is ‘‘distant’’ )
-2 stimulus hits the receptors
-3 receptor processes
-4 neural processing
-5 perception
-6 recogniation
-7action
