Cartilage Development Flashcards
What tissues make up a synovial joint?
Bone, cartilage, joint capsule, synovial membrane, synovial fluid, ligament, tendon
What are the different parts of a long bone in a juvenile?
Epiphysis, physis and metaphysis
What are the two parts of a long bone in an adult?
Epiphysis and metaphysis
How can an injury in a juvenile result in altered bone development?
Damage to the physis can result in temporary/permanent arrest of all or some of the physis resulting in shortening or deformity
In what directions do bones grow?
Both longer and wider
What is osteochondrosis used to describe?
A group of conditions of developing cartilage and its supporting bone
What is osteochondritis dissecans?
Detachment of a chondral or osteochondral fragment from the articular surface
What is peri-articular fragmentation/fracture?
Detachment of chondral or osteochondral fragment from the peri-articular area
What initiates osteochondrosis?
Vascular problem in the epiphysis with failure of the normal cartilage to bone succession
How does osteochondrosis progress?
Fissures develop and cartilage separates causing fragments and new bone formation
Subchondral bone cyst forms as cortical bone fills in around an area of cartilage
In what animals does osteochondrosis usually occur?
Fast growing high performance patients
What diseases do dogs commonly get?
OCD, FCP and UAP of the elbow, shoulder, stifle and tarsus
What diseases do horses commonly get?
OCD and SBC of stifle, tarsus, MCP, PIP, DIP and sometimes the shoulder elbow and carpus
What disease do pigs commonly get?
OCD of the hip
What disease do broiler chickens commonly get?
OCD of the stifle
