Cartilage Flashcards
What are some characteristics of cartilage?
Cells - chondro-
Fibers and matrix depend on the type of cartilage
Avascular
Where is hylaine cartilage?
developing skeleton of embryo
Epiphysial plate of growing bones
Articular cartilage
Respiratory tract
Where is elastic cartilage?
Ear, epiglottis, and eustachian tube
What are the main types of fibrocartilage?
Intervertebral disks
Meniscus
Mandible
Describe hyaline cartilage.
Most common
Glassy appearance
Type 2 collagen, proteoglycans, water
Perichondrium
Resists compression
What is appositional growth?
Cells from the inner layer of perichondrium differentiate into chondroblasts
What is interstitial growth?
Growth of chondroblasts by mitosis within the cartilage matrix
Describe elastic cartilage?
Type 2 collagen
Elastic fibers - make it much more flexible
Surrounded by perichondrium
Describe Fibrocartilage.
Type 2 collagen, and type 1 collagen in dens regular pattern
Cells in rows
Provides tensile strength
No perichondrium
