Cartilage Flashcards
What are the six functions of cartilage?
1) Bear mechanical stress with reversible deformation 2) Support soft tissues 3) shock absorber 4) sliding area for joints 5) Facilitation of bone movements 6) Embryonic skeleton
Where does cartilage come from?
Mesenchyme -> Chondroblasts
Describe the structure of cartilage
-Condrocytes and matrix surrounded by Perichondrium
What makes up the matrix of cartilage?
-Aggrecan (Proteoglycans) -hylauronic acid -Chondronectin (Glycoprotein) -Type II collagen
What is Chondronectin?
-A glycoprotein found in the matrix of cartilage
What are lacunae
Small clusters of chondrocytes contained within the matrix of cartilage
What portion of cartilage contains progenitor cells?
The perichondrium
Does cartilage have a basal lamina?
no
Where are the blood/lymph vessels contained in cartilage?
the perichondrium
How does the matrix/chondrocytes get nutrition?
Diffusion from the perichondrium
What controls chondrocyte proliferation?
-Somatotrophin (HGH)
What type of collagen is found in cartilage ECM?
Type II
What kind of proteoglycan does cartilage use?
Aggrecan with Chondrotin/Keratin sulfate
What are the three types of cartilage?
-Hyaline -Fibrocartilage -Elastic Cartilage
How is Elastic Cartilage different from Hyaline cartilage?
More elastic fibers = more elastic
