carrying capacity Flashcards
what is population size?
total number of organisms of one species in a habitat
what is carrying capacity?
the maximum stable population size of a species an ecosystem can support.
what abiotic factors affect population size?
amount of light, water and space
temperature
chemical composition of surroundings
when abiotic conditions are ideal…
individuals grow
reproduction is successful
population size increases
when abiotic conditions are not ideal…
organisms cant grow as fast
reproduction not as successful
population size decreases
which biotic factors affect population size?
competition
what is intraspecific competition?
competition between organisms of the same species
what is interspecific competition?
competition between organisms of different species
when does interspecifc competition occur?
different populations compete for same resources. if 2 species both sharing the same food source there is not enough available for both so population sizes are limited.
one species will become better adapted to the surroundings and will outcompete the other.
when does intraspecific competition occur?
individuals in same population compete for same resources. causes cyclical change in population size around populations carrying capacity.
predator prey relationships…
population sizes of predators and prey is interlinked. a change in prey causes a change in predators.
carrying capacity graphs
when population of a species is below carrying capacity the number of individuals will expand until carrying capacity reached
