Carnial Nerves 11 & 12 (XI & XII) Flashcards
mediates head and shoulder movement
Accessory nerve
Accessory nerve is a motor nerve that is formed by the union of
cranial and spinal roots
The cranial root is formed from the
axons of nerve cells of the nucleus ambiguus
The nucleus ambiguus receives corticonuclear fibers from both
cerebral hemispheres
Efferent fibers of the nucleus emerge from _________ between the
Anterior surface of the medulla oblongata
olive and the inferior cerebellar peduncle
Cranial root runs laterally in the
Posterior cranial fossa and joins the spinal root
Cranial root joins the vagus nerve and is distributed in its pharyngeal and recurrent laryngeal branches
muscles of soft palate, pharynx and larynx
The spinal root is formed from
axons of nerve cells in the spinal nucleus
Spinal nucleus is situated in the
anterior gray column of the spinal cord (in the upper 5 cervical segments)
After a short distance the spinal root separates from the
Cranial root
Accessory nerve runs downward and laterally and enters the deep surface of the
sternocleidomastoid muscle and supplies it
Accessory nerve crosses the posterior triangle of the neck and passes beneath the
trapezius muscle and supplies it
Accessory nerve brings movement of the
Soft plate
Pharynx
Larynx
Accessory nerve controls the movements of
Two large muscles in the neck
Hypoglossal supplies all the
intrinsic muscles of the tongue
styloglossus
hyoglossus and the genioglossus muscles
