Self & Self-actualization:
self awareness begins at infancy
self actualization is the tendency to actualize the self that is perceived in awareness
Self-concept & Ideal Self:
Self-concept includes aspects of awareness. basically being aware of aspects of our experience and of ourselves
Ideal self is how one wishes to be. it can also fall under self concept
Levels of awareness
Experiences below threshold of awareness (ignored/denied). - occurs when there are multiple competing stimuli
Experiences accurately symbolized (admitted to self). Positive qualities we attribute to ourselves
Experiences perceived in a distorted form (inconsistent with self) denied experiences that involves anger and resentment to people
Becoming a Person:

Recognizing regard from others.
Positive self-regard.
Becoming autonomous
Barriers to Psychological Health according to rogers
Conditions of Worth
Incongruence
Defensiveness:
Disorganization:
Conditions of worth
Qualifications attached to positive regard
- it is the opposite of unconditional positive regard
Incongruence
Organismic experiences inconsistent with self-concept
the experience we live does not fit with our self concept
eg. I consider myself a perfect student is my self concept
but the organismal experience is that i fail my exam .
Defensiveness
Protecting self-concept via denial/distortion
Disorganization
When defenses like denial and distortion fail, behavior becomes disorganized
Fully Functioning Person: according to Rogers (8)
Adaptable,
open to experience,
trusts self,
lives in the moment,
seeks intimacy,
integrated,
trusts human nature,
enjoys richness
experience below threshold
Ignored or denied
Eg. A woman walking down the street and does not recognize any stimuli
Eg. A woman who hates kids but does not show it
Experience accurately symbolized
Admitted to self
Positive qualities we attribute to ourselves
Experiences that are perceived in a distored form
It is inconsistent with the self
Eg. Denied experiences could involve anger and resentment to people that are not attented. To or expressed. But that can influence our behavior towards them
