Define dental caries
Disease of the mineralized tissues of the teeth: enamel, dentine and cementum, due to the action of bacteria on fermentable carbohydrate
Where are cervical caries?
At the neck of the teeth, where the enamel and cementum meet.
Where are root caries?
In the cementum
What are recurrent caries?
They form under and around a filling
What are three reasons for xerostomic caries?
Radiation, medications, and systemic conditions (i.e. diabetes)
What three factors are necessary to produce caries?
Plaque/bacteria, tooth structure, and carbohydrates
During what time frame would one classify early childhood caries (ECC)?
71 months or younger (under 6 years)
What are the four most common cariogenic bacteria in the mouth?
Strep mutans, strep sobrinus, lactobacillus acidophilus, actinomyces viscosus
Which bacteria is implicated in enamel and coronal caries?
Strep mutans
What bacteria is implicated in root caries?
Actinomyces viscosus
