caries terminology, practical 2 Flashcards
nonselective caries removal
1) everything (infected, affected, discolored) is removed
2) even pinpoint caries
indirect pulp cap
1) activa
direct pulp cap
1) MTA
stepwise (two step) caries removal
1) carious tissue is removed and a temp restoration is place
2) months later, remove until firm dentin and permanent restoration
selective caries removal
1) carious tissue removed until firm dentin reached
caries removal approach
1) moderate and advanced
- typically nonselective is done
infected dentin
1) soft mushy, necrotic dentin with bacteria present
2) active infection
3) ONLY leave if you are within 0.5 mm of pulp
- unless they are in pain (then endo)
- or if there is swelling near the root (then endo)
affected dentin
1) dry, leathery, demineralized, no bacteria
2) may contain bacterial toxins and acids
simple, compound, complex caries
1) one surface
2) two
3) three
primary caries
1) first time lesion on that surface
recurrent / secondary caries
1) junction of the tooth and restoration
2) microleakage
- seal is not perfect
residual caries
1) caries that remains in a completed tooth prep
incipieny/ reversible
1) non cavitated
2) remineralizable (ICDAS 1,2…E1, E2)
3) appears white when air-dried and it disappears when wet
- white spot lesion
acute/rampant caries
1) rapidly damages tooth structure
2) multiple teeth involved
- light colored and soft
3) bottle caries, substance abuse
chronic/slow
1) slowly progression
2) demineralized tooth that is almost remineralized
3) dark, hard, shiny
